In 2017, two women in Virginia, USA were inspired to create & sew 600 kits of washable and reusable menstrual hygiene pads and accessories for girls and women in remote villages in Ghana. They told their church members, who got behind the project with fabric donations, cutting and sewing, and collecting supplies. Soon other folks in nearby communities heard about the project and wanted to get involved! Over the next six months, at least 50 women, men and children gathered in their free time to sew 6000 pads and 1200 moisture-proof panty shields! In February and March 2018, a group of American volunteers and our team in Ghana brought all 600 kits of 10 pads, 2 shields, pain reliever, soap, washcloths, and Ziploc bags to girls and women in Ghana who have little to no access to disposable menstrual hygiene products.
HELP US SUSTAIN THIS PROJECT!!
VOLUNTEER TO SEW PADS! You don't need to be an expert! Email Sara at firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll connect you with our sewing team leader who will tell you everything you need to know.
DONATE MONEY! Designate your donation as "Pads Project" and help us cover all the expenses associated with distributing the kits - fuel, staff wages, food and lodging, etc. Use the DONATE button to donate through PayPal.
ONGOING SUPPORT FOR SUSTAINABILITY With grant funding, we will create a sewing center in Ghana where seamstresses will sew the pads at a living wage. We think every woman should have access to these soft, comfortable, effective, environmentally-friendly pads! We plan to market the pads to women in developed countries, and put profits back into the project to support FREE distribution of the kits to girls and women in villages.
Feed three birds with one hand! Empower women living in poverty with employment, give girls and women in remote villages access to needed menstrual hygiene, and lessen environmental pollution across the globe. Sound like a good idea? We think so!
Contact Sara at email@example.com if you know of eco-friendly, fair trade oriented businesses that would be interested in carrying our pads or if you're a business interested in partnering with us!
